Understanding Our Pool Consultation Process

Embarking on a pool installation project can seem daunting, but Kelley Custom Pools makes it simple and stress-free. Our process is designed to keep you informed and excited every step of the way.

After an initial correspondence via a phone call or contact submission, an on-site consultation is set up between you and our projects manager. At this time, we will meet at your property and go over all the needs, wants, and extraneous variables it will take to install a swimming pool at your location.

We will talk about types of pools, placement, options, and how much of the peripheral contracting you want us to handle.

You will be left with a hard copy of an estimate sheet at the end of the meeting (no wait). Once the contract is written, emailed, and signed, you generally put down a 10% deposit to lock in the price and your place in line (we generally run a bit of a backlog).

Understanding Our Pool Construction Process

When the construction phase begins, our build crew shows up and the kit is delivered to the location. It takes about four to five working days to complete the principal construction of the swimming pool:

  • Day 1 - Excavation. During this process, the hole is dug to make room for the structure. If it is a vinyl-lined pool, then the steel walls will be set as we dig the bottom. If it is a fiberglass insert, this is where we dig the hole and tamp the rock base for the shell to sit on.

  • Day 2 - For a vinyl-lined pool, this is where the rest of the steel wall is assembled. At this stage, this where we “check for square” and “pin and level”. We ensure that the pool is not only perfectly square but that the walls have all been held to level and then pinned to the earth where the footer will be poured. We will then pour a 10-12” concrete footer all the way around the pool structure to lock it in. We will also pour the shallow end at this time.

  • For a fiberglass pool, Day 2 consists of the shell being craned off the delivery truck and set in the hole. You can expect your neighbors to be out taking lots of pictures!

  • Day 3 - For a vinyl pool, the deep end of the pool is poured. We use a special blend of materials that is called “pool base” which is hard like cement but water permeable like grout. It gives the pool bottom its uniform shape yet holds up to any fluctuations of water tables by allowing the pressure to equalize on the bottom. This takes a skilled hand to finish as it does not behave exactly like concrete, and the measurements have to be exact so that the liner will fit later on.

  • Day 4 - Plumbing, backfill, and grounding. At this point, we run all the plumbing lines back to where the filter system will go. For vinyl-lined pools, we install a four-inch perforated drain tile around the structure to channel any ground water away. We then backfill the whole structure with white rock (never dirt). At this time, the electrician bonds the structure to make sure it’s safe.

  • Day 5 - The concrete finisher pours the pool decks.

  • Day 6 - The liner is installed in a vinyl lined pool, and the water is added to operational level. This is when the automatic pool cover will be installed if the pool gets one.

  • Day 7 - The electrician hooks up the rest of the equipment and fires up the pool. Finally, you will receive a full tutorial with our projects manager on how to use and maintain the equipment.
